If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you may have already seen a few sneak peeks of a recently completed dining room for a family of 5. If you haven’t, then you are totally in for a treat today! 🙂
This sweet family reached out to me through the live chat feature on my website. They recently moved from Canada and settled here in Katy for the husband’s work. They are no strangers to moving, as they do every couple of years. But they still wanted to feel like home, even if it might only be for a couple of years.
They wanted a well pulled-together look, but still be family friendly for their three children and cat. We decided to tackle the main areas downstairs – foyer, living, dining, kids’ playroom and breakfast area first.
Their aesthetic is very simple, casual and comfortable; nothing too flashy or pretentious. They already owned many of the furniture pieces and wanted to keep them all, so my job was to bring in accents and accessories to finish off the spaces.

The dining room table, sideboard and art had to stay in the room per the clients’ request. Even though I would have loved to start fresh with all new pieces, the existing pieces were easily worked into the new look.
Here’s what I did.
The existing chairs had to go. Although they inherited these pieces from a family member, they were way too wobbly and very uncomfortable to sit in. I brought in 6 tufted parsons chairs that are a lot more comfortable. The dining room will not be used very often, so we kept the budget in check by going with an inexpensive option but still good quality, and very stylish. The fabric is treated against stain from little fingers.
Next I brought in a new wool area rug. I chose a contemporary design to keep the room from getting too serious. The design has nice movement and gives a bit of visual texture
Of course, no windows should ever be naked, so I had 4 custom drapery panels made from an amazing Kravet geometric linen fabric. The drapery panels adds some softness to the windows and cozies up the room ever so nicely 🙂 YUM!

The original pieces of art had to stay in the room. I used the orange from the artwork as a pop of color throughout the room. The urns on the table top were filled with red lentils (yes LENTILS!), and a nice bouquet of orange, yellow and pink roses were brought in to spread the pop of orange around the room.
I finished off the room with other florals and accessories.
