One Room Challenge Fall 2015 Week 1: A Guest Bedroom Makeover

Call me crazy, or maybe I am a glutton for punishment, but I am throwing my hat in the ring for the Fall edition of The One Room Challenge once again.

Despite my crazy schedule, despite my participation in the upcoming ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Holiday Show House, and despite a lot of personal stuff going on in my life currently, I have decided to take on this wonderful challenge. Why? Because it is a great community of amazing designers and design enthusiasts who come together for these six weeks and share this challenge in common. It is great inspiration, a great way to get noticed, some accountability, and a great way to finish a room in our home. As designers, our homes usually take the back burner to our work.

Linda, the creator of the One Room Challenge must have been touched by an angel when she came up with this brilliant idea. It has only grown more and more year after year, and will continue to grow. Linda blogs over at Calling It Home, and you have got to hop on over to see what she is up to.

In case this is your first time hearing about The One Room Challenge, here is a brief overview: It is a design challenge where 20 designers makeover a room in their home or their client’s home and blog about the progress each Wednesday over a six week period leading up to the big reveal on week number six. Other designers like myself are invited to participate and blog about our progress each Thursday. It really is a neat idea and a lot of talented designers participate each time.

This is my fourth time participating and this time around I will be working on my guest bedroom. At the moment the guest bedroom is a catch all space where our dog lived before my daughter took him with her to college in Florida. The builder grade carpet was stained with Rufus marking his territory, so that was recently pulled out and replaced with plywood sheets cut into strips and installed as hardwood (tutorial coming soon)

The Before

BEFORE

And you thought I was kidding about how grody the carpet was. Yep, it is embarrassing but I had to show you where the room started

BEFORE

The Room Currently

This what the room looks like today. The floor is sheets of cabinet grade birch plywood cut into 6″x96″ planks and installed the same way you would hardwood. It will be painted but I will leave the method as a surprise, so you will have to come back next week to see either the finished floor, or the plan

The Floor Plan

The room is a small 10×12, but I will be squeezing a queen sized bed, and a vanity in the room to make it more comfortable and feel like home for my guests

The Concept

I am going for drama with a touch of luxe; trendy yet classic; bold yet restrained. I want it to be a memorable room where guests will feel like it is  a real get-away

The Color Palette

The color palette is bold but restrained. It will just be three colors – black, white and fuchsia in small doses and metallic gold accents

The Mood Board

The pieces aren’t all the exact pieces that will be used, but they will be very similar. Come back next week Thursday as I break down the individual pieces I chose for the room – why I chose each piece and how they make up the look I am trying to achieve.

The Inspiration

I can’t say that I have a real inspiration for this room, but I am always influenced by things around me, my travels and the work of other accomplished designers. While the look I am going for is nothing that I have really seen before, Eddie Ross’ work has the bold and daring look that I love. So to some extent his new book is my inspiration.
