Trends From High Point Fall 2018 Market – The Materials

I have been going to High Point since 2011, and this market was a completely different experience. This time, I got the chance to slow down a bit, and learn more about the products and the materials. I saw things from a whole new perspective, and I have a new appreciation for the products and how they are made. So much so that this post is dedicated to the materials that were trending at market.

Leather and Hides

Leather and hides were everywhere at market, which is not that unusual. What was unusual is the way they were used. Take for example these beautiful chairs by Aidan Gray with very classic lines. Leather was used in a very contemporary application to really modernize an antique piece. The color-blocking technique also highlights the modern twist to this classic piece.

Capiz was also seen seen in unusual applications at market. Typically shown on small side tables, capiz was showing on much larger pieces including chairs. This Bernhardt chair boasts beautiful capiz on the backside. And in the background you can see capiz on the headboard

German Silver

The first chest from Bernhardt has a capiz front with ribbons of german silver inlaid. The one below is wood wrapped in sheets of german silver. Amazing and intricate detailing

Marble Inlaid With Brass

The hand detailed designs of these pieces from E.J. Victor are even better looking in person. The beautiful ribbons of brass inlaid on marble is very eye catching

Grasscloth on case goods

Grasscloth is a widely used wallcovering,  but it was being used in unique ways as a new trend spotted at market. Grasscloth on tables and case goods and even on a mirror frame. Modern History and Thibaut had some great pieces that highlighted this trend

Wood tones are making a comeback and so are grasses like rattan used in unexpected ways like on light fixtures.

Performance Fabrics

Performance fabrics was huge at Market. It’s gone far beyond a trend and is now the norm and what clients should expect. We are more into casual lifestyles and these fabrics lend themselves nicely to worry-free family life. The hand of these fabrics are better than they have ever been. The overall theme from This Fall High Point Market is casual yet luxurious lifestyle, family friendly, entertaining and really living in your home. From the functional pieces we talked about in our last round up, to the types of materials that were being used, manufacturers understand that a home is meant to be lived in and enjoyed without worrying about the investment you’ve made.
