Why We Love Fiddle Leaf Fig Trees
I am admittedly a houseplant serial killer, but lately I have been coveting these fiddle leaf fig trees. I love the sculptural effect and height that they bring to a room. It is always a plus to bring a bit of greenery into every well decorated space. Have you noticed that they seem to pop up in every shelter magazine spread and design blogs? There’s a reason they are so popular. Fiddle leaf fig trees are almost like natures’s sculptures. They are big and bold, and a breath o

An Education In Area Rugs-Part II
By now you guys are experts in choosing the right color, material and construction of your area rug….right? 🙂 As I mentioned in Part I of this two part article, choosing the right size area rug is the biggest mistake people make. Choosing the proper size is essential to filling the space properly and making the rug look the best it can in your home. Here are a few scenarios with illustrations outlining the best ways to determine the size rug you need for your space. Illustra

An Education In Area Rugs- Part I
Purchasing an area rug can be a very intimidating process. Rug prices vary dramatically based on material, construction and the quality of the rug. These factors can be hard to distinguish, especially with the many choices of style, color and quality available. I decided to break up this article into two parts because there is just so much you need to know to make an educated decision when purchasing an area rug. If you are in the market for a new area rug, here are a few bas

How To Look For Quality Upholstery
In a world of flat-boxed, assembly-required furniture, how can one detect a quality piece from an inferior, poorly made item? Today we’re a transient and impatient society. We don’t like to wait, so levels of product have emerged to suit our differing lifestyles and timelines. Good furniture is readily available and good enough for the present. Better furniture is semi-custom with a lifespan of 10-15 years. Best furniture is totally custom, heirloom quality, and built-to-last

A Little Bit Of Shopping Therapy
For those of you who follow me on Facebook you may have seen the post that my car was broken into yesterday in the parking lot of my design studio. Both windows on the passenger side were shattered and it appeared as though they were trying to steal it altogether. I won’t talk too much more about it, as I am still a bit shaken up, but I am blessed to be ok and nothing valuable was taken from my car. I have shared a photo on both my Face Book pages if you want to take a look.

How To Mix Fabric Patterns In a Room
I get this question alot from do-it-yourselfers who are trying to decorate a space and want to have a cohesive and well pulled-together finished product. Adding textiles is a very important piece of the puzzle to achieving a winning design. Textiles helps to anchor your color scheme, add personality, soften hard lines, add texture and create a comfortable and visually appealing space. Although it might seem fairly simple to do, a good designer knows that it goes beyond just c

Update On the New Digs!
The usual Sunday ritual – attend Sunday school at 9:45 followed by Worship Service at 11:00, lunch with the kiddos at 12:30 and recently the addition of visiting the new house currently under construction. It’s hard for me to call it “home” at this point. Not because it is still a few weeks from being finished, but because there are so many things that are out of my control that need to happen to make this a reality. The biggest one obviously is finalizing the sale on our cur

A Passionate Designer Is Always A Student
I’m sure it is true for most professions, that the professional should seek to learn more and sharpen their skills in their chosen field. As an Interior Designer, not only is it a requirement, but our industry continues to evolve, and as trends come and go, it is in our best interest to stay in the know, and always seek to learn and grow. Whether it is taking the required CEU’s (Continued Education Units), visiting Market events like High Point Furniture Market, attending sem

High Style On A Budget
As an Interior Designer, there’s no greater joy than landing a project with a very generous budget to source beautiful, high-end and on trend furnishings. But the reality is that most projects are for average, working class families who desire a beautiful and stylish home, without spending their kids’ college savings. There is a fine line, however, between what’s a reasonable budget and the HGTV culture of redesigning a whole house on a $1000 budget! One of the things I do at
