At the beginning of each year, we look at design trends and determine which ones we would love to see stay, and of course the ones we would love to see go bye-bye.
But there are some trends that are bound to stick around for a long time, and really have become the norm in the industry.
We don't have to be a slave to trends to appreciate my list of the 9 design trends that are bound to be big for 2019 and beyond.
1 - Saying goodbye to formal dining rooms
These days more and more, we are finding formal dining rooms being used for other purposes. With today's more casual and laid-back lifestyles, people just don't formally dine. Formal dining rooms designated by builders on the floor plans are giving way to sitting rooms, game rooms and home offices. Here, we converted what was a formal dining room on the builder's floor plan to a ladies study and lounge area
2 - Kitchens are getting bigger and more of a living space than utilitarian
Kitchens are getting bigger and bigger, and they have become so much more than a utilitarian space where you cook and wash dishes. Kitchens have become more of a living space, and a lot of family activities take place there. We will continue to see this trend, since big open kitchens lend themselves nicely to family living
3 - Technology
Yep, homes are getting smarter and smarter with all kinds of technology to make your life easier. All you need is a smart phone. No longer do you have to worry about leaving the door unlocked, or the worry that you forgot to turn off the stove. Wireless technology has enhanced the way we live and it will only improve from here.
4 - Performance Fabrics
With casual lifestyle being the new trend, the need for fabrics that can hold up to everyday wear and tear has become a necessity and no longer a luxury. Performance fabrics like Revolution and Crypton have been huge at furniture markets, and are answering the demand for stain-resistant, easy to clean fabrics that most families can live with.
5 - Deeper, comfier seating
Deeper comfy sofas made for lounging is definitely a trend we will see much more of. Because of technology, more families are spending time at home, and their seating needs to be comfortable for gatherings and watching a good movie or three
6 - Nana Walls
Imagine how amazing it is having that indoor/outdoor experience in your home, where you can fully take in the views and welcome nature in. Well, many homeowners are catching on to this trend, and the demand for Nana walls is growing. I recently met with a new client, and that's one of the things at the top of his wish list.
7 - The 5th Wall
Ceilings, or as I like to call them, the 5th wall, has taken its place in the trend hall of fame. No longer will it be ignored. More and more designers are treating ceilings as intentionally as they do the 4 walls in a room. Anything goes - from wallpaper, to paint to moldings to beams, ceilings are getting the treatment they deserve
8 - Dressed Up But Casual Lifestyle
Clients are looking for the best of both worlds. A home that is luxurious and dressed up, but still casual enough to enjoy for everyday living. I call it dressed up casual. Lots of white or light upholstery pieces with performance fabrics, but very tailored and refined.
9 - Loungey Seating
Loungey seating has become pretty popular, and it is a look that I enjoy doing in my clients' homes. Loungey seating is basically where 4 lounge chairs are arranged where they are all facing each other. Here in these two living rooms, I did 4 leather chairs each to create a lounge-like, casual look and feel. This arrangement encourages great conversations.
So there you have it, these are 9 of the design trends I know we will only see more of, and we are ok with that.
